I don't think this song is really about high school. I think more than anything this song talks about the superficiality of life and uses high school as both a metaphor and a comparison to do so.

High school is a very superficial and materialistic place (in general) but one assumes (and possibly hopes) that the real world is different. I think this song shows that it really isn't. People are just as obsessed with the personal details of celebrities' lives in "real life" as students are with the details of the rest of the student body. Gossip and rumours fly in the real world the same way they do in high school: a scandal travels very quickly through tabloids and entertainment TV shows just as a scandal runs through the hallways of high schools.

More than anything, this song is a comment on the immaturity of society as a whole. Because does it really matter what Jessica did, or how Mary-Kate lost weight, or if Tom Cruise is straight or gay? No, but people will still kill to know anyway.
